How i reduced my sweet cravings

Dr Lavanya, MDS, Oral Pathologist

To begin with, let me tell you that you can have any sweets at any age. All you sweet lovers, are you relieved now?

Well, talking about my journey – I had always been experimenting with various varieties of sweets. My uber-fascination for sweets since childhood meant that I had no qualms about indulging in even a quarter kilo of Indian sweets on a daily basis.

By the time I was into my teens and early twenties, I had assumed a plump round structure – but thanks to my height (a little above the average Indian woman), that didn’t seem to be a problem. I never took the physical activity seriously, and my favorite pastime was to sit at a place and read books.

A sedentary lifestyle at my home and workplace, coupled with the effects that follow pregnancy and motherhood, eventually leads to fat accumulation throughout my body. But surprisingly, my love for sweets never declined…

…not until my late thirties that my body finally start to give signals. My blood sugar levels, though within limits, were gradually spiking.

So I went to the gym, and I did shed a few kilos. But the root cause, my sweet cravings, remained unaddressed – and my lost weight returned in less than a year (sounds familiar?).

Fortunately, with the help of a few like-minded friends, I adopted a holistic approach to controlling my sweet cravings. My life finally took a U-turn. Today I am able to maintain optimal weight for my height, my blood sugar levels have been normal, and I have successfully controlled my sweet cravings.

Now, in my mid–forties, I feel I am just getting started. My body and mind are aligned, and I have never felt better!
